5 Reasons Why You Should Never Create Your Own Website

“It’s really difficult, and I advise everyone against choosing themselves as a client for a project.” – These words from a lecturer have stuck with me. Why? Because he was absolutely right! Of course, you benefit from client management and project handling, go through different design processes, and learn how to efficiently execute a project. But when you choose yourself as the client, it can quickly turn into an endless construction site.

The Biggest Mistake: You Are Your Own Worst Client

I have owned this domain for almost two years. The idea of advancing my creative self-employment has grown steadily during this time. I thought, “Better sooner than later!” Unfortunately, I first learned about the associated costs – and little about the actual benefits of a well-thought-out online presence.

Six months ago, I finally completed my landing page: logo, design, SEO-optimized content (which was incredibly tedious), engaging call-to-actions (CTAs), a complete footer with an imprint, and GDPR-compliant implementation. I focused on these details far too early instead of prioritizing my core website content and services.

Constant Revisions Instead of Completion

Over the last six months, I have completely revised my website twice – always at intervals of three to four months. Now, one month before my first exhibition, I was once again staring at an almost empty landing page and made a decision: “Today, it will be finished!”

The biggest problem with “self-management”? The lack of objectivity. With client projects, I work structurally, follow a clear strategy, and adhere to project milestones to achieve the best possible outcome. But with my own website? I was careless, procrastinated, or kept redesigning things because I could “always adjust them later.”

A fitting example from my everyday life: If a friend asks me to cut her hair, I send her to a hairdresser. But my own hair? I cut it myself – with questionable results.

5 Reasons Why You Should Outsource Your Website

1. You Save Time: Instead of tweaking your website for months, you could focus on your core business.

2. You Gain a Professional Perspective: An external designer or developer brings experience, know-how, and a trained eye.

3. You Avoid Tunnel Vision: You eventually only see your own mistakes and become unsure. A professional provides clarity and efficiency.

4. SEO and Technical Aspects Are Complex: Yes, there are great tools, but sustainable optimization and clean technical implementation require expertise.

5. Your Website Will Be Ready Faster: Instead of investing months or years, a professional can get you online in just a few weeks.

My Website Is Finished – And I’m Satisfied

After much frustration, countless adjustments, and an endless loop of perfectionism, I finally did it: My website is live! But next time, I will definitely hire a professional.
